Washoe County has it’s first West Nile Virus case acquired locally this year. County health officials say it is the less severe type of the virus. District Health Officer Kevin Dick says people still need to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, West Nile positive mosquito samples were confirmed in the Damonte Ranch and Hidden Valley areas, both have been treated with mosquito larvacides. They also urge you to avoid having standing water on your property, which serves as mosquito breeding grounds, and that horses are vaccinated against the virus. There is no human vaccine. In extreme cases West Nile infection can be fatal to people.
