February 28, 2013

(RENO, Nev.) -- A 21-year-old driver was sentenced on Thursday to 16 years in prison for killing a pedestrian while driving under the influence in 2011.

Cesar Manual Bernal-Cuadra hit Charles "Doc" Heinemann, 63, while driving a Toyota Camry at dusk on  Oct. 21, 2011, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office released blood and urine tests that showed an illegal amount of marijuana was in Bernal-Cuadra’s system. Surveillance video showed Heinemann was walking legally in a marked crosswalk when he was struck, the DA's office said.

Bernal-Cuadra is reported to have had a prior DUI conviction stemming from a May 2010 arrest that also involved marijuana in the same vehicle.
