Staffing Shortages at Nevada Prisons

Nevada’s prisons have a major staffing problem, with as many as 25% of positions vacant. Some are urging Gov. Steve Sisolak to call in the National Guard to help. The Department of Corrections says the vacancy rate before the pandemic was 9%. Besides recruiting, critics say the prison system doesn’t pay very well, and deals with burnout, because many are pulling double shifts. The Governor is not directly addressing whether calling out the guard is under consideration.
