(Reno, NV) — The NTSB is releasing its final report on a deadly midair collision during the 2023 National Championship Air Races in Reno. The report says two experienced racing pilots deviated from their expected flight paths and never saw each other before the crash. The World War Two-era planes collided about 300 feet above the ground on the final day of the air races. It happened as the pilots prepared to land at Reno-Stead Airport. The pilots, both men in their 60s from California, were killed.

Aviation experts say that for whatever reason, at least one racing pilot apparently didn’t see the other when their vintage planes collided in mid-air while preparing to land after finishing first and second at Reno last weekend. Federal investigators expect to release a preliminary report in another week or so. (Adam R. Mayberry/Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue via AP, File)(Adam R. Mayberry | AP)
