(Reno, NV) — In response to several calls to Reno Direct regarding homeowner insurance non-renewals, the City of Reno is launching a pilot program aimed at creating defensible space in the Ward 2 neighborhood.
The 2025 Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan reports a growing wildfire threat, especially in neighborhoods adjecent to the Wildland Urban Interface, due to high winds, low humidity, and drought-like conditions.
The City is partnering with GreenVibe World on the project.
Reno Fire Department’s Talina Sky said on Tuesday that they will look at serving other areas if the pilot program is successful.
Along with the program, GreenVibe World will utilize at-risk youth to work on cutting out fire starters in the area. Not only will it allow them to earn community service hours, but it will also increase pro-social development.
The program started September 6 and will run through March 1, 2026. While it will cost upwards of $52,500 for a six-month term, all funds are paid for by Green Energy Funds.
