(Sparks, NV) — The Sparks Police Department is aware of the growing concerns from the public regarding severe traffic congestion along Sparks Boulevard and Vista Boulevard during peak commute times, particularly near access points to I-80 eastbound and westbound.
Over the past several weeks, officers have observed an increase in vehicle collisions, reckless driving, and road rage incidents in these heavily traveled corridors. These issues not only delay commute times but also significantly increase the risk to public safety for all roadway users.
One of the primary contributors to the congestion is driver behavior including illegal maneuvers made in an attempt to “beat the traffic.” Officers have noted a rising number of motorists using private or public roadways, such as parking lots or neighborhood streets, to avoid traffic-controlled intersections. This behavior is not only unsafe but also a violation of NRS (Nevada Revise Statue) 484B.400(2), which prohibits a driver from bypassing a traffic-controlled device by leaving the roadway.
Another common issue involves drivers proceeding into intersections during green and red lights without regard for blocked traffic ahead, thereby obstructing cross traffic and compounding gridlock. Even with a green light, NRS 484B.250 requires drivers to yield and ensure the intersection is clear before entering. Blocking intersections put all drivers at risk and worsens delays for everyone.
The Sparks Police Department urges all motorists to remember that the privilege of driving comes with the responsibility of ensuring safety, patience, and adherence to the rules of the road. Attempting to bypass congestion with perceived shortcuts may actually result in longer delays and increased danger for all road users. In many cases, staying the course on the main road will result in faster travel times than detouring through residential or business areas.
As a reminder:
- Do not use private property (such as shopping centers, gas stations, or other businesses) to avoid traffic signals.
- Yield properly at intersections, even when you have the green light, to avoid blocking traffic.
- Refrain from aggressive driving or retaliatory behavior. Road rage can lead to criminal charges and serious accidents.
- Plan extra time for travel during peak commute hours and follow posted traffic regulations.
The Sparks Police Department will continue to monitor traffic patters and will begin issuing citations to drivers found in violation of relevant traffic laws if these behaviors persist. Our goal is to improve safety and traffic flow for all commuters in our growing city.
