(Reno, NV) — Washoe County School District is in the middle of an enrollment crisis. On Tuesday, District Chief Financial Officer Mark Mathers alerted the Board of Trustees that they could be down to 58,000 students when the next fiscal year hits. That’s a drop of nearly 10,000 students since the COVID-19 pandemic. Mathers pointed to Washoe County’s cost of living as the main reason for the drop in enrollment.
He recommends that costs need to be lowered by 10 percent if they want to balance next fiscal year’s budget.
