Here’s what’s trending in Wednesday sports:
High School
Galena High is building from within. District officials yesterday announced that Rusty Bendle will take over the baseball program as head coach. Bendle served as the Grizzlies’ pitching coach the last two seasons. He played college ball at Youngstown State in Ohio.
WNBA
The Las Vegas Aces look to get within one game of another championship when they play tonight in Arizona. The Aces lead the WNBA championship series two-games-to-none. The best of seven series shifts to Phoenix tonight after two wins by the Aces in Las Vegas. Game four will be in Phoenix on Friday. If needed, game five will be in Vegas.
NHL
Hockey season kicks off tonight with a marquee matchup in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights will host the Los Angeles Kings at T-Mobile Arena. First puck drops at 7 pm. Both teams dominated in the regular season last year, but fell short in the playoffs. The Golden Knights picked up right wing player Mitch Marner in a massive sign-and-trade deal back in June. Both Las Vegas and Los Angeles have their eyes on a Stanley Cup championship this season.
MLB
Two American League ballclubs are now locked into 2-1 Division round series. The Mariners took down the Tigers 8-4 from Detroit to pull ahead in the best-of-five series. The Yankees staved-off elimination after edging the Blue Jays 9-6 from the Bronx. All eight teams are in action on Wednesday. Seattle will try to advance past Detroit in the Motor City, the Brewers hope to sweep the Cubs in the NLDS from Wrigley, New York will once again attempt to stay alive against Toronto in front of its home crowd and the defending champion Dodgers are eying a sweep of the Phillies from LA to make the NLCS.
