Here’s what’s trending in Monday sports:
NCAAF
Nevada’s losing streak reached four on Saturday with a 44-10 loss to San Diego State. Quarterback Carter Jones was 15-of-31 passing for 195 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. On defense, Dylan LaBarbara increased his national-leading total in tackles-for-loss to 14 with four, including two sacks, Saturday night.
Penn State has moved to fire head football coach James Franklin. The school announced the move after the Nittany Lions suffered their third straight loss of the season on Saturday. Penn State’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft said in a statement that they “believe this is the right moment for new leadership at the helm of our football program.” Franklin took over the role as head coach in 2014.
NFL
The Las Vegas Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 20-10 win over the Tennessee Titans at Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders had three takeaways in the victory and led by as much as 17. Geno Smith passed for 174 yards and a score, while Ashton Jeanty rushed for a touchdown. Las Vegas improved to 2-and-4. Cam Ward had an interception and two fumbles in the losing effort. The Titans are in last place in the AFC South at 1-and-5.
Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers are alone atop of the NFC after a 30-19 win over the shorthanded 49ers in Tampa. Mayfield finished 17-of-23 for 256 yards and two touchdowns as the Bucs moved to 5-and-1 with their second straight win. Rachaad White had 86 total yards and a score in the victory. Mac Jones made his fourth start under center for San Fran and was 27-of-39 for 347 yards and two interceptions. Christian McCaffrey had 111 total yards and a rushing score, while Kendrick Bourne racked up five catches for 142 yards for the Niners, who fell to 4-and-2. The 49ers also lost another star player as linebacker Fred Warner suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
MLB
The Mariners drew first blood in the American League Championship Series. The team took down the Blue Jays 3-1 in Game One from Toronto. Cal Raleigh went deep as Seattle now leads the best-of-seven series 1-0. The ALCS continues on Monday with Game Two while the NLCS opener between the defending champion Dodgers and the top-seeded Brewers gets underway in Milwaukee.
WNBA
The Las Vegas Aces are WNBA Champions for the third time in four years after defeating the Phoenix Mercury 97-to-86. Las Vegas secured the road win in Game Four of the seven-game series, completing a sweep of Phoenix. League MVP A’ja Wilson led the way with 31 points, while Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young each chipped in 18. Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 30 points.
