(Reno, NV) – The 2026 tax season is underway and Washoe County deputies want you to stay alert for any potential scams. They say scammers are becoming more elusive each year, utilizing phone calls, emails, and social media to impersonate the IRS, tax preparers or financial institutions. If you’re contacted by someone claiming to be a tax expert, check for the red flags. Those could be promises of large refunds or tax credits, threats of legal action, emails with suspicious links, or payment requests through gift cards or wire transfers. If you are contacted by a scammer, call the Washoe County sheriff’s office.
