(Truckee, CA) – The Sierra Avalanche Center is releasing a timeline of events that occurred after an avalanche near Castle Peak that killed nine skiers. 12 people were caught in the avalanche, and the remaining 3 were able to rescue 3 of the buried skiers. Search and Rescue crews arrived in the late afternoon and excavated eight of the nine victims. Six survivors were evacuated that night under their own power to Frog Lake Huts. Following avalanche mitigation that took place after the storm ended, search and rescue crews were able to rescue five of the victims, and found the ninth buried victim prior to nightfall. Rescue operations concluded on Saturday with the retrieval of the final four victims.
