Dems Get Green Light to Extend Taxes With Simple Majority

A legislative legal opinion may clear the way for Democrats to push through Gov. Sisolak’s budget, without needing Republican votes to extend two taxes that were supposed to expire, but are needed to balance the budget. The 24-page opinion from the Legislative Counsel Bureau says all it will take is a simple majority to extend the taxes. That has Republicans threatening to sue. Senate Minority Leader James Settelmeyer, of Minden, calls the opinion inconsistent with past LCB opinions. He says what this means is the majority party has decided to not try to reach compromise.
