Republicans Sue Over Tax Extensions

The Eight Nevada Senate Republicans are making good on their threat to sue, to challenge two democratic passed tax extensions, they say required a two-thirds vote. The lawsuit, challenges both SB 551, which stopped the sunset in the state’s modified business tax, and SB 542, which kept in place a $1 technology fee on all DMV transactions. Senate Minority Leader James Settelmeyer of Minden, says the bills “Clearly violate the tax-restraint initiative.” That’s the requirement for two-thirds majority vote for any bill that “Creates, generates, or increases any public revenue in any form.” Democrats argue extending a tax already in place is not the same thing as raising taxes.
