BURNING MAN BANS SOME DRONES

Burning Man is banning “hobbyist” drones at this year’s festival and will limit the use of other drones. The event will provide some permits for drones used for media coverage, or art performances, but few other purposes. As many as 200 drones hovered over the event last year.

HICKEY IS DONE

Four-term Assemblyman Pat Hickey of Reno says he will not be seeking a fifth term. Hickey says “There is life beyond politics.” Hickey says he’s proud of the education reforms made while he served in the legislature. He plans to teach a political science class at UNR next spring, and work as a substitute teacher in Washoe County Schools.

“JACK” USED AS DEADLY WEAPON

A 43-year old Carson City man was arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon and other charges after allegedly threatening to attack an officer. His weapon: a large bottle of Jack Daniel’s.

DEATH AT GOLD MINE

Federal Mine safety regulators are investigating a death at a gold mine in northeast Nevada. The worker was killed Monday at the SSX Mine owned by Jerritt Canyon Gold LLC about 50 miles north of Elko. That’s the same mine where a fire caused the shutdown last week of a high-temperature “roaster” oven used to process ore. No one was hurt in that incident.

SEX OFFENDER FOUND & ANOTHER SOUGHT

The “out of compliance” sex offender Reno Police were looking for has been found. Jeffrey Brock is living in Oregon. Police say they are grateful for citizen input. Meanwhile, RPD and the Regional Sex Offender Unit are looking for another sex offender, Charles Jones, 31, who has a nationwide extradition warrant for his arrest for sex offenses. Jones is 5’10”, 230 lbs with dark skin and black hair. RPD says Jones is known to work out at local fitness clubs.

WILL BEAN FRY?

The sentencing phase for five-time convicted killer Jeremiah Bean is underway in Yerington. The murders happened in and around Fernley during a crime spree committed by Bean in May of 2013. Prosectors are pushing for the death penalty. His lawyer will offer testimony about Bean’s difficult childhood, low IQ and addiction to drugs.

GARDNERVILLE CRASH

A rollover crash on US 395 has left one person seriously injured. The accident occurred just after 8 o’clock Tuesday night near Wiseman Lane in Gardnerville. One person was taken to a local hospital.  The cause of the crash is under investigation.

HAN IN RENO

Hot August Nights is up and rolling at a number of locations in Reno-Sparks, including the Atlantis Resort casino. The show and shine is just a sample of what the Atlantis is featuring this week. The Atlantis also has a Cruisin’ Craft fair from noon until 10 pm, and the Super Cruise for Champions from 5 pm until 10 pm.

COLLEGE FUNDS UNFAIRLY SPENT IN NEVADA?

Former University Regent Jill Derby says she’s happy UNLV got funding for a medical school, and UNR got some extra funding in the last legislature. But she suggests community colleges aren’t getting their fair share in Nevada. Derby says on “Nevada Newsmakers,” the college funding pie has not been divided up fairly for nearly 30 years, and community colleges and their students have not gotten the funding they need.

DODGE FIRE UPDATE

A wildfire burning about 40 miles from Susanville has grown to 10,000 acres. No structures are threatened by the Dodge Fire, but it’s burning in Sage Grouse habitat. The fire is about 20% contained.

WHO STOLE THE PEPPERONI?

Reno Police are looking for a man they say robbed a pizzeria Tuesday night. The robbery happened just before 10 pm at the Little Caesars on Double R Boulevard. Reno Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man, 5’3″ – 5’6″, about 20 years old. He was wearing a black cap with a white emblem, a dark blue hoodie sweatshirt, blue jeans and a ski mask. If you have any information that can help investigators, call Reno Police.

DEAD IN THE DESERT

A man and woman were found dead in a van from apparent exposure to the heat, in a remote desert location in the Lake Mead National Recreation area.  The bodies were found Sunday in the minivan, which was stuck in the dirt. The names and causes of death won’t be made public until autopsies are complete. Park Service rangers say the pair had little water, and the area has no cell phone coverage.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD FUNDING

The Senate wants to strip Planned Parenthood’s federal funding, but its first attempt fell short. This, after grotesque undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood representatives discussing the sales of fetal tissue. But they argue, there’s no profit in the sale of aborted fetuses. Dr. Jennifer Kerns is a member of “Physicians for Reproductive Health.” Advocates say very little of Planned Parenthood’s work involves abortion, and they do not use federal funds for the procedure. Critics say that’s misleading, since federal dollars spent on one aspect of Planned Parenthood frees up money to fund abortions.

NEVADA VOTER REGISTRATIONS ARE UP

As we ramp up to next year’s presidential election, more Nevadans are getting registered, with over 8000 new voters on the roster in just July.

GUN FIRED DURING SHOPLIFTING

Police are investigating a shoplifting case that led to a handgun being fired in north Reno. Police say they were called to the Home Depot on Northtowne Lane about 4 pm Tuesday. They say security officers at the store tried to detain a shoplifter, and during a resulting struggle, a small caliber handgun was fired. No one was hit. Police have found the gun and one shell casing, but are still looking for two more. The man’s name hasn’t been released.
