Reno, Sparks and Washoe County are being recognized as a bike friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. Among the criteria considered were the number of arterial streets with bike lanes, total bike network mileage and amount of public education about bicycling. Since 2004 alone, the RTC has installed more than 160 miles of bike lanes in the community. The Truckee Meadows first received this designation in fall 2011, the first community in the state of the Nevada to receive the distinction.
