A state judge has put Nevada’s Educational Savings Accounts on hold, just weeks before the grants were expected to flow to more the families of more than than 41 students, for private school tuition. Judge James Wilson’s preliminary injunction Monday orders the state treasurer to stop implementing the program, pending further court deliberations. ESA’s allows parents to claim more than $5,000 in state “per-pupil” school funds each year, and use it for qualified education expenses. Opponents say it diverts money from public schools and violates the state constitutional ban on spending state funds for a “religious” purpose. Most Nevada private schools are religious based.
