March precipitation in the Sierra Nevada was good, with more than 16 inches in water content, nearly two and one-half times the month’s average. But the snowpack hasn’t kept pace, as demonstrated at the California Department of Water Resources snow survey in the Sierra above Lake Tahoe. Frank Gehrke of the California Department of Water Resources reported about average water content at Phillips Station. The statewide content was just 87 percent of average for the date. Gerkhe says, “The effects of previous dry years will remain for now.”
