A Lovelock woman has begun her two year prison term, after pleading guilty to forgery charges last year. Mary Ortega is accused of stealing from the free and reduced price lunch program at the Pershing County School District. According to prosecutors, Ortega gave free lunches to students who did not qualify for them, including a family member. She also kept money for the regular school lunch program, and gave students money from the reduced cost lunch program. Pershing County Deputy D-A Jack Bullock says the loss to the program from theft and screwed up paperwork, was about $300,000. Ortega was employed by the school district for eight years.
