County Under-Collected Casino Taxes

The Washoe County Commission has decided it is too much work to retroactively charge casinos for $4.8 million worth of under-collected gaming taxes. An apparent miscalculation resulted in taxes being under-collected over the last seven years. From 2009 through 2015, $4.6 million was under-collected. According to Chris Ciarlo with Washoe County, the miss-calculation shorted Washoe County by $460,000 each year between 2009 and 2015. $460,000 is less than a quarter of a percent of Washoe County’s annual general fund. Commissioners decided it would not be practical to charge back taxes because many of the properties have changed hands in the last seven years, but they say the problem has been fixed going forward.
