Lake Tahoe Visitors Create Bear Problem

Visitors to Lake Tahoe are creating a bear problem at Sand Harbor, because they’re leaving trash outside of the bear-proof garbage cans, which lures bears in for an easy meal. Social media pictures posted by a number of bear advocate organizations show trash on top of and strewn on the ground next to the park’s garbage cans, as well is littering the parking lot. Tasty treats like food-covered paper plates, watermelon rinds and empty candy packages are often too tempting for bears to resist. The Nevada Department of Wildlife says that while most of us who live in northern Nevada know how to be bear aware, many visitors don’t. So far this year just one bear has been trapped and euthanized at Sand Harbor, and if everyone takes responsibility for their garbage before they head home, maybe it will be the bear we lose this year.
