Nevada is going to get nearly $700,000 in federal funds in the battle against the spread of the Zika virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thursday announced that the Silver State will get$690,000 of the $60 Millon allocated for the fight against the disease. The money will be used to investigate and monitor local outbreaks. It will also be used to establish a pregnancy registry to help women and babies born with the virus. The Zika virus is spread by mosquito bites, sex, and from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. Zika causes only mild illness in most people, however infection during pregnancy can lead to severe brain-related birth defects. Zika cases have been reported in Clark and Washoe counties.
