Thousands of Acres Burn Near Winnemucca

The Bureau of Land Management in Winnemucca, says all but one fire caused by lightning this week have been contained. The BLM was fighting 11 fires in the Winnemucca/Orevada area; all were caused by lightning August 16th and 17th. The largest fire is the Monroe Fire, estimated as of Thursday at 11,240 acres and 70% contained, adjacent to Priority and General Sage grouse habitat. Full containment is expected today. The next largest fire, the Sand Pass Fire just north of Winnemucca off Sand Pass Road, is contained after burning about 2,400 acres. The Mill Creek fire between Mill City and Jungo Road has been contained around 1000 acres. The remainder of the eight fires were contained at under 1,000 acres each. No structures were threatened.
