Attorneys for Cathy Woods, who is being called the “longest-ever wrongfully incarcerated woman in U.S. history,” have filed suit in federal court against four former Reno and Shreveport, Louisiana police officers, and a former prosecutor. They say they “knowingly caused her wrongful imprisonment.” The lawsuit accuses the former police officers of coercing false statements out of a mentally vulnerable person, in the 1976 murder of college student Michelle Mitchell in Reno. Woods was exonerated after DNA testing.
