Sierra Memorial Gardens released a statement Sunday announcing that the plan to disinter bodies at Hillside Cemetery as part of a planned development has been suspended. The cemetery dates back to the 1800s and houses the bodies of some of Reno’s founders. The plan to dig up and move more than 800 bodies had some long-time Nevada families speaking out. Some family members said the plan was a disrespectful way to sell real estate. While the cemetery is privately owned, the plots themselves are owned by the families, with individual assessor parcel numbers attached, but many of the deeds have not been updated in more than 100 years.
