Washoe County and Clark County are reporting the first flu-related deaths of this year’s flu season. The victim in Northern Nevada is a middle aged person under the age of 60 who, in addition to contracting Influenza A – H1N1, also had other factors that contributed to the death. The Southern Nevada Health District says the person who died there was over the age of 65 and had been hospitalized. Flu activity is mild at this point, but health professionals recommend getting a flu vaccination. The viruses are most common in the fall and winter, and flu season in Nevada generally peaks in January and February.
