A career criminal convicted of killing a customer during a Reno bank robbery has been sentenced to life in prison. 68-year-old Van McDuffie was found guilty August 17th of bank robbery with a dangerous weapon resulting in death and use of a firearm during a crime of violence causing death. He was sentenced yesterday in federal court. On October 16th, 2013, McDuffie pulled up to a Bank of America on South Virginia Street in a cab, walked in and started flashing a gun. He shot 80-year-old Bob Sperry in the chest after Sperry, a bank customer, told McDuffie to “get out of here.” An off-duty police officer chased McDuffie to a nearby bus stop, where McDuffie was arrested. McDuffie had been arrested more than 60 times in the last five decades.
