Democratic lawmakers in California are considering a bill that supporters say would make the Golden State the first in the nation to add a third gender option to state identifying documents. State Sen. Toni Atkins says the measure would add a non-binary gender option on driver’s licenses, birth certificates and ID cards, and help to simplify the process for changing one’s gender on those documents. Atkins says the bill would be a benefit to transgender people because they face discrimination when they use IDs that don’t match their perceived gender.
