A handful of states permit physician assisted suicide, and the state legislature is considering it, calling it a merciful choice for someone facing a terminal illness. But for many, including doctors, it is an uncomfortable and uncertain choice. Dr Brian Callister is one of them who is concerned that people could be pressured to end their lives when they’re not ready, by family members, insurance companies or others. Many are depressed and feel like they’re a burden on others, and that’s not when big decisions like this should be made. And sometimes diagnostic mistakes are made. He told KOH’s Dan Mason Show we need to value the older people in our lives, and very often terminal illnesses pull families together. The bill comes up for debate Monday at the state legislature.
