“Dirty” Doctor Desai Dies in Custody in Reno

The Doctor convicted of murder and fraud in one of the largest outbreaks of hepatitis in Nevada history, blamed on unsafe clinical practices, has died in custody. Dipak Desai was 67. Desai died Monday night at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. The outbreak of hepatitis in Las Vegas led health officials in 2008 to notify 63 thousand former patients that they may be at risk for infection. More than 123 cases were blamed on the clinic. Vials of anesthesia were reused during colonoscopies, and other sterile procedures were violated. The case led to a flurry of lawsuits and criminal convictions against Desai and some of his employees. Desai was serving a sentence at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
