University of Nevada, Reno is relocating 30 employees who work inside their Facility Services building because low levels of radiation have been detected. The university got a call in September from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, saying they needed to test that building because back in the early 1920’s the US Bureau of Mines used it to separate radium from ore. Kerri Garcia with UNR says they basically have two options, and both will be costly. They either have to attempt to decontaminate or tear it down. The building itself is listed in the University of Nevada, Reno’s historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
