The Nevada ACLU is responding to Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske’s letter to the DMV, that claims that agency’s errors led to non citizens illegally voting. The ACLU says under the National Voter Registration Act, DMV can’t make determinations regarding voter eligibility and must transmit all signed voter registration applications it receives to the appropriate State election officials. It is then the duty of the state to determine voter eligibility. The NVRA also requires all applications and renewals for driver’s licenses and ID cards to serve as voter registration applications. This was agreed to over a year long process, by the Secretary of State herself, the DMV, ACLU and voters rights groups. We’re still waiting for the Secretary of State to follow up with some details of the alleged illegal voting. Since the letter she’s said nothing.
