Joint Effort to Prevent Overdose Deaths

More than 50,000 Americans die from drug overdose annually. Northern Nevada has had its share, with small clusters of deaths in the Reno-Carson City area in early 2017. A joint effort to educate the community about the antidote “Naloxone” is underway to try to stem the tide. A new Naloxone Guide for Patients and Caregivers is available on line and at some local pharmacies. Jennifer DeLett-Snyder, Executive Director of Join Together Norther Nevada hopes more pharmacies will be supportive. The Naloxone Guide for Patients and Caregivers was a joint effort of Join Together Northern Nevada, the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Washoe County Health District. To download it go to washoecounty.us/health According to Dr. Laura Knight, Chief Medical Examiner, about 15% of the Washoe County Examiner’s Office’s autopsy and examination caseload is drug-related.
