(KOH) – The University of Nevada (19-33, 13-15 MW) baseball team won a slugfest 17-9 at New Mexico (28-25-1, 18-9-1) on Friday night at Santa Ana Star Field in a game that lasted four hours and 18 minutes. With the victory the Wolf Pack earned the fourth and final spot in the Mountain West Tournament. The tournament will be played at either San Diego State or New Mexico, May 25-28.
Nevada improved to 19-33 with the win and 13-15 in MW play while the Lobos, losers of five in a row, fell to 28-25-1 and 18-9-1 in conference play. The final game of the series is set for noon PT on Saturday.
The Pack set season highs with 17 runs, 17 hits, 14 RBI, 27 total bases, five stolen bases and tied the season high with 44 at bats. Individually right fielder Michael Echavia was perfect at the plate going five-for-five and set team highs with five runs scored, five hits, seven RBI and 10 total bases. First baseman Grant Fennell scored a team season-high five runs and third baseman Jordan Pearce’s three stolen bases is a high for a Pack player this season.
The 17 runs, 17 hits, 14 RBI, 27 total bases, five stolen bases and 44 at bats were all season highs.
Right fielder Michael Echavia (5-for-5,3R,7RBI,HR) set team season highs with five hits, seven RBI and 10 total bases.
First baseman Grant Fennell (2-for-4,5R,2RBI) scored a team season high five runs.
Senior pitcher Evan McMahan made his 89th career appearance which is one off the school record of 90 held by Rico Lagattuta (1993-96). McMahan’s 28 appearances this season is tied with Lagattuta (1994) for third most in a season.
Junior Mark Nowaczewski (6-5) won his team leading sixth game of the season.
