The Veterans Memorial Plaza, which was being constructed at the end of Veterans Parkway near Sparks Boulevard, will be relocated because it’s in a flood plain.The recommendation came from FEMA, who let the Veterans Memorial committee know only two weeks ago. Charlene Bybee, who’s on the plaza committee, says costs to move soil to raise the plaza enough to avoid flooding were too high, but the plan is to keep the plaza somewhere in Sparks. One option the committee is looking at is moving the plaza to the Sparks Marina. But, before a location is approved, it will have to be pitched to the Parks and Recreation Department, then go before the city council for a vote.
