(KOH) – One of the more dangerous intersections in Douglas County could see a safety improvement starting as early as this fall. NDOT is planning a new traffic signal at the intersection of US Highway 395 and Airport Road. The intersection has been the scene of several crashes per year, despite the high-T configuration with acceleration lanes for traffic turning onto the highway. The speed limit of 65 mph on the highway reduces the reaction time and compounds the severity of the crashes. Douglas County views the intersection as so dangerous that county employees and school bus drivers are prohibited from turning left onto the highway. The traffic signal will be similar to those at Johnson lane and Stephanie Way that only stop NB traffic and require drivers coming from the side street to merge with SB traffic. The project is in final design review and expected to go to bid later this summer. Work should start this fall.
