A brush fire in the Topaz Lake area was knocked down around 8 o’clock last night. The fire, which was first reported about 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, burned about eight acres, a downgrade from the earlier estimate of 20. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says voluntary evacuations were in effect for the area of Comstock Road and Mark Twain Avenue, near the Topaz Lodge. Highway 395 has reopened at Highway 208 after being closed during the firefight. At least one structure burned and more were threatened.
A second fire, off Highway 88 in California’s Alpine County is at about 100 acres on private land and has been named the Payne Fire. There are no evacuations. It’s about 45-percent contained. Ground crews continued the fight into the night.
Another fire in the Ray May area of Douglas County grew to about 3 and a 1/2 acres before being contained; it was on BLM land. No word yet on a cause for any of the fires.
