(KOH) – The Bureau of Land Management last week said two recent wildland fires near Winnemucca were caused by humans. According to the Great Basin 5 incident commander, the 22,000-acre MM155 fire, which started Monday southwest of Winnemucca, was caused by a discarded cigarette butt. The BLM also said that the Grass Valley fire that consumed 12,000 acres after its start on Wednesday /southeast/ of Winnemucca, was caused by a vehicle. Sadly, it’s par for the course: a study released this year by the University of Colorado found that **84%**, or 5 out of every 6 wildfires in the US over the last 20 years, were human-caused. The BLM says that grass and brush are extremely dry and easy to ignite right now, so the public can help by not driving over dry grass with ATVs or other vehicles, and smoking in designated areas only.
