Whites Fires Southwest of Reno Nearing Containment

The Whites Fire southwest of Reno near the Whites Creek Trailhead is now 35% contained and has burned 29 acres, downgraded from 60 acres. The fire is burning in an area that is rocky and extremely dense with vegetation, timber, and forest litter. Crews have been reinforcing fire lines, suppressing spot fires, and mopping up hot spots within the fire perimeter. Timberline Drive remains open to locals only, and there is no access to the Whites Creek and Thomas Creek Trailheads on the Carson Ranger District. Officials hope to have the fire fully contained by the end of today. The cause of the fire has been determined to be a lightning strike.
