The firewatch camera network is expanding fom 30 camera to 50. Graham kent of the University of Nevada Seismology lab is scouting new locations for the cameras, and looking toward expanding south into the Stanislaus National Forest. The cameras give an early warning on fire starts, giving firefighters a chance to prepare their response. The goal is as many as 2,000 cameras, at a cost of several million dollars, but Kent says the savings in fire suppression costs would be exponential.
