Phone Scam Looks Like Call From Your Own Phone

(KOH) –  A new telephone scam is hitting residents of the Reno-Sparks area. It looks like you’re getting a call from your own number.  It’s all made possible by Caller ID spoofing, or displaying a number that’s not the same as the actual telephone number making the call. The scams started out by spoofing 800 numbers, then advanced to spoofing local numbers because they are more apt to be answered. Now they’re faking the same number they are calling.

Sgt. Dennis Carry of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office’s Cybercrimes Unit says answering the call isn’t dangerous in itself, but if you do, be careful what information you give out. He tells KOLO8’s Ed Pearce it’s all about getting personal information like credit cards or passcodes.

The scam has been going around for several years, but now the 775 has been targeted.
