The Tohakum 2 Fire, 40 miles north of Nixon, is estimated to be 94,471 acres and 82 percent contained. Fire crews continue to stake out near the fire to reduce travel time and as they fight the fire.Air tankers have been dropping retardant to help slow the fires and crews are using bulldozers to widen roads in areas to use as fire breaks. 409 fire fighters are working the blaze that started on August 29th, including 5 helicopters, 18 engines, and 3 bulldozers. Crews are asking travelers driving through the area to not stop along the roadway to to watch the fire.
The Slinkard Fire is now almost 10,000 acres according to Sierra Front, and is 60% contained. Mark Peebles came up from Southern California with his team to help fight the fire, and talks about some of the challenges he and his crew are facing. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center says U.S. 395 is open, but you should be prepared for possible closures again. Highway 89 over Monitor Pass remains closed due to fire activity. There have been no injuries and no structures lost. The fire is expected to be fully contained by Friday.
