The unusually high number of viral meningitis cases continues to rise in the Susanville area, and in Washoe County. Since July 15th, the 5 to 17 year-old age group makes up over 53% of the local cases. Washoe County Health District Epidemiologist Dr. Randall Todd says we need to stress the importance of good hygiene, environmental cleaning, and personal exclusion in slowing down the spread of the virus. The advice is washing hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands; avoid common playing areas for children such as inflatable bounce houses and slides; avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups, water bottles, sports drinks or eating utensils with others who may be sick. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and stay home when you are sick.
