Some Controversy Over The School District’s Lice Policy

The Washoe County School District is updating it’s lice policy. The district announcement was presented to the Board of Trustees Tuesday afternoon. Since 2011, the school district does not stop kids from coming to class, riding to school bus, or participating in other activities, even if they are known to have lice. Dana Balchunas, the Director of Student Health Services for the district said “No child should miss any time in school because of lice or nits,” “It is not a disease. It doesn’t harm kids.” Balchunas says the school district is not seeing an increase in lice infestation. A new committee, made up of parents, teachers and other officials will be looking into the policy and how the district can provide better education on the prevention of lice. 10-12 million people are infected by lice nationwide each year. There is no timetable yet on when the formation of the committee will take place.
