Smith Valley, Whittell Football Teams Show Sportsmanship

(KOH) – Local high school football teams go head to head every Friday night, and players and fans sometimes forget about sportsmanship. But some things are more important than the game.

Whittell was blowing out Smith Valley 62-12 with a few minutes left in the game, when according to the Tahoe News Tribune, both coaches met at midfield. Was the losing coach upset about the score being run up on this team? As it turns it out, no. They were arranging an opportunity for Steele Wetterer, Whittell’s autistic team manager, to get on the field. The QB handed him the ball and he ran 51 yards for a touchdown, as the Bulldogs put on a show of pursuit, with one player even diving at Wetterer’s heels. The fans went crazy, and the Smith Valley players joined in the applause.
Warriors Coach Phil Bryant told the Tribune’s Bill Rozak that ” it shows love, compassion, and sportsmanship. Those 5 secs could be the biggest of his high school life.”
