Annual FBI Crime Report Shows Increase in Reports of Rape

The annual FBI crime report is out, showing a staggering increase in rapes reported from 2012 to 2016, but they say that doesn’t necessarily mean more crime.  Lieutenant Zack Thew of the Reno Police Department says increased advocacy and education has lead to increased reporting.  In 2012, 33 rapes were reported in Reno and just four years later that number has risen to 139, an increase of 421%.  RPD believes more victims are coming forward.  Another stark contrast in the report is the amount of cleared cases versus the number reported.  In 2016, just 36 were cleared of the 139; cases that couldn’t meet the legal burden of proof to make an arrest. The Crisis Call Center helped 757 sexual assault victims last year. It received more than 51,000 calls and more than 10,000 texts, a large gap that could close because of social movements.
