Congresswoman Jacky Rosen has introduced the bipartisan Military Domestic Violence Reporting Enhancement Act with GOP Rep. Lynn Jenkins from Kansas. If passed, the legislation would prevent members of the military convicted of domestic abuse from buying firearms by making domestic violence a criminal offense. It would also close a loophole in the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which currently categorizes domestic violence convictions as assault, because an article for domestic violence does not exist. Under federal law, an individual convicted of domestic violence can’t legally buy a firearm, while some convicted of assault are still able to.
