Winter Driving Tips From Reno Police

With the winter weather upon us here in Northern Nevada, the Reno Police Department has responded to several crashes related to drivers not removing ice and snow from their vehicle. The most recent crash was this past Monday where a driver struck a pedestrian they could not see. Never leave your vehicle unattended when warming it up. If you need to warm your cars up t consider investing in a security kill switch or auto start system for their vehicles. Get the feel of the roadway; start out very slowly, then gently test your brakes to find out how well you can stop. Start slowing down long before you come to an intersection or turn.
Keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you. Reduce speed. There is no such thing as a completely safe speed on snow and ice. Each city block or stretch of highway may be different, depending upon sun, shade, amount of sanding and other conditions. Allow yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination.
