A former Las Vegas police officer was arrested last week in Reno on a “cold case” rape and murder in Las Vegas from 1997. 51 year old Arthur Lee Sewall, was originally booked as an ex-felon failing to register his address, and then was booked the next day on charges of murder and sexual assault. Sewall worked as a jailer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 1990 and in 1992 he became a police officer. In February 1997 Sewall was arrested for sexual assault and oppression under color of law and resigned as an officer in March 1997. May 8, 1997, a woman’s body was found in a vacant duplex northwest of downtown Las Vegas. She had been raped and shot. In March 2016 rape evidence from the case was sent for DNA testing as part of a 2015 grant from the New York District Attorney’s Office. That DNA profile was entered into an FBI system that looks for matches and the profile matched Sewall in February 2017. Las Vegas detectives tracked Sewell to Reno and interviewed him Jan. 11, the day he was arrested for failing to register.
