Snowpack Numbers Released by The Natural Resources Conservation Service

The Natural Resources Conservation Service says the Mt. Rose summit snowpack sits at 65% of average for the monthly winter survey taken Monday. That’s the third lowest since 1932, and similar to 2015. Hydrologist Jeff Anderson says the pack is roughly what it should have been at the beginning of January, but snowfall was scarce during the first month of the year. He says generally when the snowpack is below median at the beginning of February, we end up with a fairly dry year overall. Still snowfall was heavy enough last winter to keep reservoirs up this year. Anderson says the snowpack below 8,000 feet is near the lowest ever, recorded at 25%.
