As Nevada prisons face rising overtime costs, they are changing some policies to save money. James Dzurenda, director of the Nevada Department of Corrections is dropping a policy that required two officers to accompany prisoners to the doctor — just that could save $3.5 million in six months. Costs for state correctional officers have jumped 34 percent in the last two years, with the state paying $15.5 million in overtime costs in fiscal 2017 and $12.5 million the prior year. The change requires only one officer per inmate and one officer to provide “relief” as needed, if an inmate must be moved or taken out of restraints.
